Community Programs
Smoke Detector
Program: Thanks to a generous donation from
Ben Venue Labs, the Bedford Division of Fire will provide
free smoke detectors and batteries to residents that
meet the following conditions:
- Homeowners
that do not have d a detector in their home, or have
one that is at least 10 years old. There is a limit
of 1 detector per household. Renters without smoke detectors
should contact their landlords. All landlords are responsible
for purchasing smoke detectors for rental properties.
- Free
replacement batteries arer available to all residents,
with a limit of 2 per household.
- Detectors
can be picked up at the fire station (must show proof
of residency) or can be delivered. Installation is available
if requested.
Baby
Sitter Classes: Provide fire safety education
in conjunction with the Southeast Branch Library.
Blood Pressure Checks:
Walk-ins 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the fire station, every
Wednesday evening at the "Party in the Park" during the
summer months. Also monthly at the Senior Citizen meetings
at Ellenwood Rec. Center or as requested at civic functions.
CPR: Quarterly
classes open to residents for basic CPR, other classes
can be arranged by calling the fire station. American
Heart certified instructors.
Carbon Monoxide Checks:
Responds to all CO detector activation's as well as routine
checks on request.
First Aid Classes:
Train adults, scout groups, etc., on first aid if an emergency
strikes. Classes are not certified.
Fire Extinguisher Classes:
Teaches residents, businesses or any group how to use
fire extinguishers.
Fire Prevention Week:
Involves visits to the schools to teach fire safety to
children in the third grade. School visits can be arranged
with other grades and preschools or scout groups. The
fire station is open to schools and civic groups anytime.
Fire Safety House:
We visit the elementary schools to help children to understand
fire safety in the home. The "house" is a mobile trailer
which has a living room, kitchen, and bedroom to simulate
fire hazards as well as how to protect themselves in the
home. The "house is sponsored by the Aluminum Cans for
Burned Children foundation.
Fire Safety Inspections:
Check all business, schools and industry for code compliance
with regard to the Ohio Fire Code. Home fire safety surveys
can be arranged through the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Hydrant Inspection Program:
The Division inspects and flushes hydrants annually to
ensure they are working properly.
Juvenile Firesetter Counseling:
Trained counselors of the department work with children
from toddlers to high-school age who play with matches
or lighters or start fires. We work in conjunction with
MetroHealth Medical Center Department of Child Psychiatry.
Medical Information Magnet Program: Provides
residents with refrigerator magnets that contain personal
medical information that paramedics can use during an
emergency.
Underground Storage Tanks:
State delegated authority for the supervision and permitting
for the installation, removal or upgrade of underground
tanks containing hazardous material or flammable/combustible
liquids.
Public Speakers: Public
speakers for civic or other events to speak on a variety
of fire related topics are available.
